With a 39-page historical introduction by Stanley Morison.

The plates have examples of the typography of 15th century Italy; 16th century Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany and the Low Countries; 17th century France; 18th century France, Spain, Italy, England; 19th-20th century France, Switzerland, England, USA, Germany and Holland. There is also an index of printers and craftsmen.

"Stanley Morison (6 May 1889 – 11 October 1967) was an influential British typographer, printing executive and historian of printing. Largely self-educated, he promoted higher standards in printing and an awareness of the best printing and typefaces of the past.
