Once upon a time, in a summer forest, there were fourteen bears . . . so begins a sweet story of a bear family's life throughout the year, told in loving and simple detail. This book features two popular stories written by Evelyn Scott and illustrated by Virginia Parsons.
Not to be confused with the noted Southern writer Evelyn Scott (who died in 1963 and whose real name was Elsie Dunn), Evelyn G. Flebbe was the daughter of screenwriter/author Beulah Marie Dix and book importer Georg Heinrich Flebbe. She married film editor David Scott in 1935. Evelyn F. Scott worked for decades in Hollywood as a story editor at MGM.
Virginia Parsons, born in Hollywood, California, though London was her home for many years, was an author and illustrator of children's books. She wrote and illustrated over forty children's books, among them 'First Things' (Golden Press, New York), and 'Mr Hobbs of End Street' (World's Work, U.K). She was most active in the 60's, 70's and early 80's. Her books were also published in France, Scandinavia, Holland, Germany, Japan, Finland, South Africa and Yugoslavia.

Jean de la Fontaine was without question, the most widely read 17th-century fabulist, and perhaps could be rivaled only by Aesop himself. He wrote for what he intended to be a sophisticated French audience; however, his stories provided important lessons on morality for children and adults alike. This 1846 edition was illustrated by artists Jules David, Tony Johannot, Victor Adam, and F. Grenier et Shaal. It also features historical notes by Charles A. Walckenaer.

M.T. Ross, "Penny", was a popular artist and cartoonist in the early 1900s whose works include "The Flower Babies Book", "The Flower Children", "Butterfly Babies", "Bird Children", "Animal Children" and others. He was also the originator of the extremely popular comic strip "Mamma's Angel Child" for the Chicago Tribune and worked with Walt Disney before he made his own company.
Elizabeth Gordon was a fantasy author and poet. Her book 'Butterfly Babies' Book' is a short children's fantasy collection of poems that anthropomorphize butterflies giving them names and stories while giving information through poetry on the trees and flowers they eat and take shelter from. The book ends with an area for the reader to notate when they see butterflies and what butterflies they see.
This charming children's book of poems contains color illustrations from Ross on each page of each butterfly including on the cover boards!

"A dream is a wish your heart makes."
― Charles Perrault, Cinderella
Charles Perrault was a 17th-century French author who is most-remembered for his fairy tales. When "Les Contes" was first written it was quite ahead of its time, and his writing helped lay the groundwork for a new literary genre that would become very popular throughout Europe of the next century. Many of his fairy tales include stories that are still popular today such as Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Thumbelina, and Sleeping Beauty.
This printing is a fine, 19th-century printing that includes charming illustrations and a decorative front cover.

A rare first edition of the final work by esteemed 19th-century illustrator, Randolph Caldecott, 'Jack and the Bean-Stalk.' This delightful pictorial retelling of the famous English fairy tale was written by Hallam Tennyson and published in 1886. Nearly complete Caldecott would pass before completing his work for this book. Despite being unfinished, in memoriam for Caldecott, the publisher elected to utilize his 30 charming sketches in their "incomplete" state. A timeless tale accompanied by timeless art. A must-own for any collector of children's tales.
