About This Item

London, UK: Collins, 1968. 1st UK Edition . Hardcover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. First English edition. 480pp. In blue peppered cloth with gilt titles on spine. 8vo. Cloth very slightly rounded at spine base. Some spotting on text block edges, lower text block edge also has some light staining. Some faint and occasional spotting on first and last few leaves. Translated from the original German into English by J Maxwell Brownjohn. Later published in paperback under the title The Wolves. Kirst, a popular German author in the mid 20th century has been undeservedly forgotten. This is one of his finer novels, a timeless fable of corruption by power which stands as a archetype for his anti-war output. The action takes place around the fictional village of Maulen, between 1932 and 1944, following the rise and fall of the local Nazi party.
