About This Item

Frankenthal, Gegelische Buchhandlung, 1788. With 1 engr. folding plate. 44 pp., 14 unn. leaves, 694 pp. 8vo. Contemp. half calf, back with two labels richly gilt (somewhat faded). Frankenthal, Gegelische Buchhandlung, 1788. "Auserlesene Sammlung der besten medicinischen und chirurgischen Schriften", vol. XXII. Johannes Kämpf (1726-1787), personal physician to the landgraves of Hesse-Homburg and of Hesse-Nassau, was known for recommending visceral enemas against various conditions, including melancholy and hypochondria. The present work, first published in 1784, saw numerous editions. If one is to believe the author, 2000 copies of the first editions, not counting pirated copies, were sold. The book deals with complaints based in the abdomen, an immensely popular topic at the time. Chapter eight is entirely devoted to case histories. Pp. 437-496 contain Kämpf's replies to reviews of his book from sceptical colleagues. - Cf. Blake p. 239 (2nd ed. Leipzig 1797 and 3rd ed. Vienna 1788); Wellcome III, 376 (2nd ed. 1787); Lesky 346 (2nd ed. 1786). Not in Waller, Osler, Neu, etc. SCIENCE: MEDICINE ;
