About This Item

Philadelphia: Privately Printed, 1903. Hardcover. Very Good in brown cloth. 20 pp., one [1] unnumbered leaf of plates, Frontispiece portrait. Rogers [1833-1900] was an American scientist, inventor, and businessman and a pioneer in the development of the railroad industry in the United States. He was also a noted inventor and engineer, and was a prominent figure in the scientific community. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and was instrumental in the founding of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Rogers was also a proponent of the "practical sciences," and he believed that scientific research should be focused on solving practical problems and improving people's lives.Ê Ê Later in life, Rogers became involved in the field of aeronautics, and he was a supporter of the Wright brothers' experiments in aviation. He died in 1900, but his contributions to the fields of engineering, science, and business continue to be remembered and celebrated today. Ê Ê Bookplate on front pastedown of Alert Chapin Rogers [a stepson of former Representative Hamilton Fish Sr., and a grandson of Alfred Clark Chapin, a mayor of Brooklyn]. Ê Ê Uncommon Gilded Age memorial publication. **OCLC** shows two copies: one each at The University of Pennsylvania and at The University of Chicago.
