New York: D. Appleton, 1871. First American edition. Hardcover. fine. First American edition. Octavo in emerald green cloth letterted in gilt and decorated in black. 422 pp. plus publisher's catalog at rear. A tight, bright example and unusal thus, a touch of darkening to the foot of the spine. Deaccessioned from an historical society with a small 19th century stamp stating "duplicate" on the title page. Collection of pieces assembled, as Tyndall states in the preface, "...to extend the sympathy for science beyond the limits of the scientific public." These include pieces on scientific materialism, scientif use of the imagination, radiation, chemical rays and the structure of light in the sky, dust and disease, magnetism, science and spirits, remarks on miracles , etc.
