Franzen -Historian Robert Aron's large book is a spirited, satisfying rehash of France during the Normandy assault onwards through liberation, much of it served in the narrative-newsreel manner of American reportage, determinedly objective & its share of quirky fact, odd picture of Petain pridefully watery-eyed ever Free French heroics, black comedy of Hitler's lunatic demand on Paris -back & forth by the Wehrmacht's General Choltitz. Strangely, though the large logistic episodes -- the advance into Brittany, Provence,Alsace, the National insurrection, the Paris opening- show up as the stirring antidotal clips / experiences, a number of other events are including the sad & sordid: Communist venality, including the risk of revolution; the terrible mishmash massacre of the Vercors, the compromised Marquis: some of those true-blue guerrillas -many summary executions of suspected countrymen/ collaborators- a dirty business which Frenchman Aron honestly records & Hero, Charles de Gaulle- & his three-fold struggle - to unify and direct the Divergent forces, secure from Allied Statesmen recognition of provisional government , Assure integrity of a restored France even if at the end, with the homeland reclaimed and the peace secure.
