About This Item
New York: International Book and Publishing Company, 1900. Special Limited Edition. Hardcover. Good. ix, [1], Frontis illustration. Three other illustrations. Cover has some wear and soiling. Front board has some weakness. Despite this being a hard cover book, the verso states "This volume is issued for sale in paper covers only." It is surmised that the Special Limited Edition was prepared from the same plates and this statement was overlooked and not removed. Dedicated to Rear Admiral William T. Sampson for his victory during the Spanish-American War. Cyrus Townsend Brady (December 20, 1861 - January 24, 1920) was a journalist, historian and adventure writer. His best-known work is Indian Fights and Fighters. Brady's first major book, For Love of Country, whilst telling the story of a fictitious John Seymour, was actually based in part on the true heroics of Nicholas Biddle, one of the first five captains of the fledgling Continental Navy. In 1914 Brady began working as a screenwriter at Vitagraph Company of America. Poor little Blakely Fitzhugh Fairford was left be hind to the tender care of his mother's friends and relatives in Virginia when his mother followed no, led Sir James back across the seas. He was thus early deprived of that love and care which even the sternest mother feels for her offspring, and which was lavished upon his more fortunate step-brother in Heathcote Hall in such measure that the fondest and most doting peasant woman could not have surpassed it in intensity and degree, while Blakely was more or less forgotten.
