About This Item

Enclosed is a three page letter to Dorothy Furman in which the author confesses his unhappiness with his book as he was "tied down with absurd restrictions as to space, number of plates, cost & c. as though one was building a house or some other useless & prosaic business...." Hamilton concludes: "Thank you also for your tasteful little plate, which is just what a lady's plate should be, + the verse exactly suits my own temperament. I do not like to see armorial bearings on the plates of Ladies of our time, they seem incongruous, in fact heraldry is dead as to fact, though a delightful study..." Cloth at hinges separated but boards firmly attached with gutters intact.
