About This Item
Stated First Edition with no mention of subsequent printings; A Near Fine book in a Near Fine dust jacket. SIGNED and warmly inscribed by the author on the 2nd free paper. A handsome copy of this extraordinary novel, by the author of "The Collector" and "The Magus"; scarce in the true first edition and signed by Fowles. This copy is in near fine condition with a square tight binding, bright gold design and silver lettering over pale blue boards, and crisp, white pages throughout; the book does show some mild sunning to the spine ends, some slight rubbing to the edges, and a couple of small soiled areas to the exterior text block, else fine. Housed in a bright and clean near fine dust jacket that shows some very light rubbing to the spine ends and edges, and a date stamp to the bottom of the back flap (the corner of the back flap also has a tiny tear). Overall, a highly presentable and very collectible copy of this novel, enhanced with Fowles signature. Not remaindered, not price clipped ($7.95 intact), and not ex-library; in archival protection and will ship in a sturdy box.
Synopsis
The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1969), by John Fowles, is a period novel inspired by the 1823 novel Ourika, by Claire de Duras, which Fowles translated to English during 1977 (and revised in 1994). He was a great aficionado of Thomas Hardy, and, in particular, likened his heroine, Sarah Woodruff, to Tess Durbeyfield, the protagonist of Hardy’s popular novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891).
