About This Item
New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company,, 1930. A fine copy, in the dust jacket First edition, second printing, of the author's second mystery. Ellery Queen, the pseudonym created by writers Frederic Dannay and Manfred Bennington Lee in 1929, "took the intellectual game that was the formal detective novel to greater heights than any American writer" (The Weekly Standard). As Queen, they wrote over 30 novels, edited anthologies of crime fiction and true crime, and founded and edited Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, which has been published continuously from 1941 to the present. The jacket matches the first printing jacket, aside from the inclusion of "second printing" on the lower edge of the front panel, and "by the author of 'THE ROMAN HAT MYSTERY'" at the top of front panel. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles and outline of bookend on spine in black, front lettered in relief on black bookend design, top edge red. With dust jacket. Spine ends very slightly bumped and rubbed, a fine copy, clean and bright, in the bright jacket, a little loss to tips, a few chips and short closed tears to extremities, a few spots of rubbing, remnants of adhesive and very faint soiling to rear panel, still a bright example.
