About This Item

New York, Chicago, Toronto: P. F. Volland Company, 1919. Overall very good.. First edition of this cheerfully illustrated Volland book of fairy stories by Johnny Gruelle, the author of RAGGEDY ANN. Johnny Gruelle was a multifaceted illustrator, publishing political cartoons and newspaper comics in addition to his children's stories. The cartoony designs of some of his characters foreshadow Disney's animation aesthetic. FRIENDLY FAIRIES is a Volland Happy Children Book containing 15 fairy stories including the Fairy Ring, The Three Little Gnomes, Mr. & Mrs. Thumbkins and others. This is a nice copy of an uncommon Gruelle title. 9.25'' x 6''; 9.5'' x 6.5'' (box). Original color pictorial boards. Original color pictorial box. Color pictorial endpapers of a fairy gathering. Illustrated in color throughout. [88] pages. Ink gift inscription to half title; ink owner's name to inner box lid dated 1920. Box repaired. Spine ends lightly bumped, some wear to joints, almost invisibly repaired; occasional light soil to text. Illustrations beautiful.
