About This Item

London: Martin Secker & Warburg Ltd.. Very Good in Very Good dj. 1957. First Edition. Hardcover. [moderate shelfwear to top and bottom edges, typical with this cheaply-produced book, but generally a good sound copy; the jacket spine is slightly faded, with just a teensy bit of paper loss at top of spine and at a couple of corners]. A passionate memoir by blacklisted journalist/editor/novelist (and one-time film critic) Belfrage, written during the three months he spent in jail in New York awaiting his eventual deportation, in which he expresses both his admiration for America and Americans -- but also "his detestation of that small group of Americans who seek to panic their countrymen into a denial of elementary democratic freedoms." In his time, of course, he was speaking of Senator McCarthy and his ilk, but in case you haven't noticed, that same evil spirit is abroad in the land in the present moment. .
