About This Item
London: John Murray, 1909. Leather Bound. Fair. In generally good condition - gilded page edges, Bound in red/brown leather with gilded Frontiersman's crest and writing to front and spine. A guide for new settlers. A bit like a boy scout guide to everything. I bought it off original owner's relation. Family tree of original owner and notes about him and his family in New Zealand, newspaper clipping included. Original owner emigrated from Great Britain to New Zealand and must have thought this would be useful. It is well used - there are some loose pages - it appears to have all pages existing except the first prelim pages up to page iv. Starts on page v with preface. Front endpapapers advertise The Imperial School of Colonial Instruction run by Captain Morgan (wasn't he a pirate!?) - a part of this advert. (1/4) is missing. Has "owners name 1910 Dulwich, London" on front free endpaper (did you know any town with "wich" in it was probably started as a saltworks?). Has adverts on rear endpapers too. There is also a section of notepaper bound in after the index on page 462 with pencilled notes and sketches on: artificial respiration, a logomaran, design of a bob-sleigh, a tent, horses tracks, to find width of river, height of tree, and notes on a rifle and pistol suggested by Capt Walling . There are 20 pages of fascinating old time adverts after this. 15 cm x 11 cm
