About This Item
New York: William Wood & Company, 1881. FIRST EDITION. With 15 full-page drawings from nature by H.P. Quincy. Cloth, gilt lettering on front cover. Annotations on plate I and remnants of glue on the inner margin plate III. Ownership signature of Dr. James H. Meldee (?) on front free endpaper and K.L. Duke on front paste-down. First edition of a classical work of great importance in pediatrics, and the first American group of serial sections. This work provided tomographic images a century before the CAT and MRI. Dwight was very interested in the minutiae of human anatomy, and his chief contributions related to his meticulous studies of the anatomical variations of the skeleton and joints.
Dwight (1843-1911) grandson of John Collins Warren, graduated from Harvard Medical School. He worked abroad in the laboratory at Ruedinger of Munich where he learned the technique of examining frozen microscopical sections, which he introduced into the United States on his return. He succeeded Oliver Wendell Holmes to the Parkman Professorship of Anatomy, a position he held until his death.
