About This Item

UK,slim Qrto HB,colour illustrated Pop-up,1st edn.FINE+.No owner inscrptn,no dw/dj - as issued and no price removal from rear cover. Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,glossy/glazed paper-covered boards with pictorial colour artwork illustration by Raymond Briggs. White spine/backstrip with black+red lettering - and unusually and uncommonly - the red letters being nearly as bright as the red letters on the front! Negligible shelf-wear to edges and corners - no nicks, tears or splits present,and both boards with inevitable,but very minimal,minor and superficial scoring/indents.12pp (6 double-page) pop-ups,and additional pull and lift tabs.All complete,working and without any sign of any extra use at all,other than my own collation. Second book in the Fungus series.
A triumph of paper engineering by Ron Van Der Meer,surely one of the best produced pop-up books of recent times.As such,much in demand from BRIGGS collectors and pop-up enthusiasts alike.
FUNGUS,in all his delicious disgustingness. Following a typical day for Fungus the Bogeyman, starting when he wakes up and ending just before he falls asleep.As his day progresses,he undergoes a mild existential crisis,pondering what his seemingly pointless job of scaring surface people is really for.
The book depicts the mundane details of Bogey life in loving detail, with definitions of Bogey slang and numerous annotations concerning the myths,pets,hobbies,literature,clothing and food of the Bogeys.
Much of the humour derives from word play.For example,Bogeymen are shown to enjoy eating and sharing flies in a similar way to humans with cigarettes; one brand of fly is the "strong French Gallwasp",a pun on the cigarette Gauloises.
BOGEYDOM is dark,dim,unclear,indefinite,indistinct,abtruse,difficult to understand, unexplained,doubtful,hidden,secluded,remote from public observation,unknown,lowly,humble,dull, dingy,gloomy,murky. . . NOW READ ON --->
Raymond Redvers Briggs (b.1934).Born in London,son of a milkman. Studied at Wimbledon School of Art (at the age of fifteen,1949-53) and completed a typography course at the Central School of Art. And after National Service,he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art (1955- 57).Since 1957,he has been a full-time illustrator and author, mainly of children's books; since 1961,he has been a part-time lecturer in illustration at Brighton Polytechnic.He won the Kate Greenaway Medal twice,once for 'The Mother Goose Treasury' (1966) and then again for 'Father Christmas' (1973),the first book for which he adopted the distinctive strip-cartoon format that he has since used frequently.'The Snowman' had no words,and was adapted by him for television (December 1982); 'When the Wind Blows',a powerful condemnation of nuclear defence (for adults),was adapted for radio (February 1983) and the theatre (April 1983).An accomplished draughtsman,he works in line and watercolour,gouache,pencil and crayons.
Raymond Briggs is one of our most respected and beloved artists, and went on to produce a notable treasure trove of work.Characters that he's created are now icons for generations of children,include 'Fungus the Bogeyman', 'Father Christmas' and,of course,the beloved 'Snowman.' The biography of his parents in graphic novel form,'Ethel & Ernest',also became a bestseller in the UK,and an animated feature film based on the novel will be released in 2016.Briggs has won many other awards over his career including the Kurt Maschler Award, The Children's Book of the Year, the Dutch Silver Pen Award.
