About This Item

New York: The Macmillan Co, 1905. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Royal 8vo, 10 inches tall, cloth backed blue cloth gilt pictorial boards, very good, some light wear and discoloration to cloth spine, which has mellowed to a pleasant brown. With tipped in note to a Wendell S. Howard, 449 Strand, dated 1885. "Dear Sir, I shall have very great pleasure in showing you my studies any day this week after 6 p.m. or if you will kindly make an appointment, at an earlier hour after 12, should the first not suit you. Very truly yours, G. F. Watts." --it is addressed to art connoisseur Wendell Stanton Howard, who authored a number of catalogs during the early part of the 20th century, including texts on the collection of watches at the Metropolitan Museum, on the George A. Hearn collection of carved ivories, and a memorial catalog of old and new masters collected by Edward R. Bacon; he was also the Art Commissioner for the New Orleans Exposition of 1887, quite an honor for this precocious young man -- he was born in 1867.
