About This Item

A kind of yearbook of the Polish independent art movement in 1986, this catalog of the Na Plebanii Gallery in Koszalin documents seven exhibitions held in the gallery's first year. Founded by artist and curator Andrzej Ciesielski (b. 1946), this 'pop up' gallery operated 1986-1990 in a variety of institutions, capturing the last period of independent artistic movement in Communist Poland. In this first year, the gallery hosted six individual exhibitions Antoni Mikołajczyk's "Wyzwalanie swiatla" [Releasing light], Stanislaw Wolski's "Znaki Szczególne" [Special characters], Władysław Kaźmierczak's "New Action Painting," Janusz Zagrodzki's "Sztuka w poszukiwaniu miejsca" [Art in search of a place], Witoslaw M. Czerwonka's "Pelna Wypowiedź" [Full disclosure], Zygmunt Rytka's "Ciaglosc nieskonczonosci" [Continuity of infinity], as well as the group exhibition "Po Roku" [After a year]. The catalog includes photo-documentation of the exhibitions as well as a critical texts and curatorial statement by Ciesielski.

A graduate of the Fine Arts University in Toruń, Ciesielski was active in the independent art movement in Poland, co-organizing the last two Osieki plenairs in 1980 and 1981, eventually founding Na Plebanii Gallery in Koszalin in 1986. In 1990 Na Plebanii was reorganized into Galeria Moje Archiwum [My archive gallery] with a permanent location, where Ciesielski continued the process of collecting and archiving works of Polish neo-avant-garde and Conceptualism until 2002.
