About This Item
An illustrated catalog showcasing abstract painting of four WrocÅaw-based artists: Józef HaÅas (1927-2015), Alfons Mazurkiewicz (1922-1975), Wanda GoÅkowska (1925-2013), and Jan ChwaÅczyk (1924-2018), with an introductory text by the curator and art historian Janusz Bogucki (1916-1995). The catalog includes artist bios and a full list of works on display. Initially an artistic establishment figure, Bogucki became a member of the avant-garde Kraków Group in the late 1950s. In 1965-1974 he directed the Galeria WspóÅczesna in Warsaw, which hosted exhibitions of abstract artists, moving further away from the Socialist Realist aesthetic encouraged by the Polish communist state. After 1974 Bogucki worked outside of the official art circulation, initiating the entry of contemporary art into church spaces. GoÅkowska's and ChwaÅczyk's work continued to develop in the direction of Conceptualism, as they took part in several of the famous Osieki plein-air workshops of international artists throughout the 1970s.
