This appears to be a custom-made, one-of-a-kind collection of 24 engravings from "The Gallery of Famous Painters." The book contains plate numbers 59 through 82 (24 plates in all) from the larger, original volume. Circa 1890's (the year 1893 is written on the front end paper). The book opens with a blank end paper, followed by a frontispiece engraving, a "Descriptive Index of the Engravings on Steel" (for plate numbers 59 through 82), followed by the engraved plates.
Condition:
Soiling and staining to the covers. Tiny cloth tears at the top and bottom edges of the spine. Worn cover corners. Tight binding with no loose pages. "The Gipsy" plate has some staining at the outer margin (the engraving is unaffected). Light smudge at the outer edge of the "Elopement of Bianca Capello" plate (the engraving is unaffected). Foxing to the end papers. Shelf wear along the edges of the boards. Name/address/date (1893) written in pen on the front end paper. 2" cloth tear at the right edge of the spine. Overall the book is in Good- condition.
