About This Item

London: Chapman and Hall, 1895. 1st. Hardcover. Very Good. Octavo. 23 x 16 cm. Publisher's blu e buckram lettered and decorated in gilt on the front and spine. xv, [1], 468 pp., 13 colored drawings. Text in English. "The present volume has been written with the object of furnishing the naturali st and sportsman with concise yet fairly complete, and I hope accurate, information respecting the Game Birds and Wild Fowl of the British Islands, and their allied races and species in other parts of the world. I have sought to bring this information up to date, not only by including several species new to our avi-fauna, but by dealing with these birds from an evolutionary point of view, and acco rding to modern ideas on and recent discoveries in that particular branch of natural knowledge which is embraced by Darwinian Ornithology." (Author's Preface). The author treats species of the orders Columbiformes, Galliformes, Ralliformes, Gruiformes, Charadriiformes, and Anseriformes. The text is accompanied by attractive color illustrations. Foxing of front and back leaves. Slight discoloration of the cloth at the bottom fore-corner of the front, but otherwise a very good copy. NUC. BMC.
