About This Item

No Place Stated: Sufi George Books. Fine with no dust jacket. N.D.. Limited Signed Edition. Broadside. The author George Arthur Lareau is the self-proclaimed "Last Surviving Boston Beatnik Poet" and has produced various broadsides, books of poetry, and non-fiction works since the early 60s. This early poem, circa 1963, is the basis of a later book by the same title, compiling various writings by Lareau. The poem is letterpress printed as an 8 1/2" x 11" broadside on a sheet of stiff, "parchment" paper. The serif font text is framed by a printed scroll. This is the first copy of the broadside, copy 1 of a limited edition of 100, and letterpress printed by the author. I'll let the author explain. "It was during my last year of college,1963, that I became a letterpress printer. My first endeavor was "The Thropenny Poets Series." This was one poem on a 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 sheet and it sold for three cents a copy. I published several of my poems this way, and a student gave me some of his poems. I don't remember ever selling a copy but it was loads of fun doing it." " was a popular poet on Boston's beatnik coffee house scene, notably the ZaZen. I also gave readings at parties and once at a Harvard ladies club. I printed my first book, The Hunting Poise, while living in Washington, D. C. With a family from India. I then rode a 10-speed bicycle to Boston for eleven days and sold my book on the sidewalk in front of Coffee Corner, a 24-hour cafeteria and de facto headquarters for Boston's beatniks." One guy offered me an electric fan for a copy. You can't say my poetry doesn't attract fans. I sold the fan for $7.50 a short while later. My book was only $2.50. In today's dollars, that would be a profit of… well, anyway. Point is, people have been investing in my poetry even when they had to steal electric fans to do it." The broadside is clean, Fine, and as-new from the press. ; Signed by Author .
