About This Item

London: White Lion Publishers, 1974. First U.K. Edition. First hardcover edition of this early novel (originally issued as an Ace paperback original in 1963), set in a depopulated, post-apocalyptic future world. "The human remnants of the intersystem wars play a territory-oriented game designed to maximize births in an almost sterile population. Pete Garden, with the assistance of some Psis, determines that the Titanian vugs are horning in on the game, and that an even more radical faction of the vugs wants to sterilize Terra entirely" (Levack 18h). First Impression. Octavo (20.25cm); navy blue paper-covered boards, with titles stamped in gilt on spine; dustjacket; [4],5-188pp. Faint foxing to text edges, a little less so to endpapers, with spine ends very gently nudged; Near Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced £1.80), with trivial wear to extremities, and some dust-soil to rear panel; Near Fine.

Synopsis

In this sardonically funny gem of speculative fiction, Philip K. Dick creates a novel that manages to be simultaneously unpredictable and perversely logical. Poor Pete Garden has just lost Berkeley. He's also lost his wife, but he'll get a new one as soon as he rolls a three. It's all part of the rules of Bluff, the game that's become a blinding obsession for the last inhabitants of the planet Earth. But the rules are about to change--drastically and terminally--because Pete Garden will be playing his next game against an opponent who isn't even human, for stakes that are a lot higher than Berkeley. From the Trade Paperback edition.
