About This Item

London: Tinsley Brothers, 1870. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Octavos, x, 436; 444 pages; half red calf, matching marbled board, endpapers and edges; extra-gilt spines, edgeworn, chip in free endpaper vol.1; ex libris James C. Peasley, the First Vice-President and Treasurer of the Burlington Railroad, "one of the best-known railroad me in the United States." - so why was he interested in gambling???

"History, as it is commonly written, does not sufficiently take cognizane of the social pursuits and practices that sap the vitality of a nation; and yet these are the leading influences in its destiny - making it what it is and will be, at least through many generations, by example and the inexorable laws that preside over what is called 'hereditary transmission. ... I have contemplated the passion of gaming in all its bearings, as will be evident from the range of subjects indicated by the table of contents and indexed. I have ransacked (and sacked) hundreds of volumes for entertaining, amusing, curious, or instructive matter.' - Preface.

About Thomas J. Joyce And Company

Joyce And Company has been in business as a professional rare bookseller and appraiser since 1975. Owner Thomas Joyce was the regular book appraiser on Home & Garden TV\'s \"The Appraisal Fair\\\" program, on international broadcasts. Thomas Joyce was the co-discoverer of George Washington's personal copy of William Leybourn's 1679 edition of THE COMPLEAT SURVEYOR, from which young Washington learned some of his surveying skills at age 16. The book had vanished for nearly a century until its re-discovery in 2017. It is now back at Mt. Vernon.
