About This Item
1996. Hardcover. Used: Acceptable. Hardback with dustjacket - 1996 - good condition, exlibrary, clean - - . 0-7153-0498-4. Isbn 0715304984. In this comprehensive study of ivy, Rose has expanded his research of its species and cultivars that he began with the publication of Ivies in 1981. The earliest evidence of ivy, according to carbon dating, was about 5600 B.C. Rose writes an engrossing general history of the plant, which includes the role of ivy in medicine (some people believed it to be a remedy for just about everything). The author explains the botany, nomenclature, and cultivation of the genus and offers suggestions on growing it in a variety of places from house and garden walls to rock gardens and hanging baskets. The bulk of the book is an A-to-Z plant directory of 285 species, varieties, and clones. Each listing includes a brief history and detailed description of the plant. There are 80 color photos and plates.
