About This Item

London: Printed by Charles Rivington, 1757. [Science and Nature] ELEVENTH EDITION. Octavo (21 x 14cm), pp.[2]; frontispiece; xviii; 352; unpaginated index. Bound in brown full calf with gilt tooling to boards and spine, raised bands and red label with gilt lettering to spine. Toning throughout, neat and small marginalia notes on 14 pages overall, toning to edges of textblock, some marking and wearing to leather, bumping to corners. Very good. The 'Gardener's Kalendar' aims to offer practical advice to gardeners in their kitchen, fruit and pleasure gardens. A previous author of the text has left very neat marginalia notes throughout. The reader particular takes notes on information about kitchen gardens. On pages 256-277, he makes notes on radishes, lettuce, and 'colliflower'. In the month of October, the reader begins thinking about his vegetables for Christmas celebrations on page 283. Although a seemingly reasonable man in these annotations, his fastidious nature is revealed on page 236 when he underlines 'unite' in the text and notes in the margin 'untie'. There are annotations on pages: 4, 5, 10, 101, 128, 165, 226-228, 236, 256-7, 282-5. Sometimes these notes are as brief as an ellipsis.
