LEADING EXPONENT OF THE GOTHIC NOVEL
first edition 4 vols. 12mo. [4], 132, 186; [4], 399; [6], 375, [1]; [2] ,vi, 331, [1]pp., contemporary half calf, spines panelled by raised bands, large blind tool at panel centres, plum morocco title and numbering labels gilt, marbled sides and edges marbled to match, occasional foxing, some joints cracked but tight, but generally a nice copy in an attractive binding.
Radcliffe (1764-1823) was the leading exponent of the Gothic novel and one of the first novelists to include vivid descriptions of landscape, weather and effects of light in her work. Her novels were immensely popular throughout Europe and she received an unprecedented advance of £500 for her novel The Mysteries of Udolpho. To her final romance which is first published posthumously in this book, are added the valuable memoir of her by Talfourd and some other more minor works.
