About This Item

London: Chatto & Windus, 1924. A story compiled from letters, diaries, newspaper cuttings, suppositions, recollections, oral information; and the papers of the late Sir Eustace Morven. With a preface by J. H. Wells. Pp. 332; red cloth, spine lettered in black, edges of boards a trifle rubbed; a little faint foxing and soiling, the outer leaves lightly offset; Chatto & Windus, London, 1924. Sixth impression. *A novel, first published in 1919, peopled with characters who are descendants of those in Dickens' Dombey and Son. Loosely inserted is a newscutting of an article by Sir H. H. Johnston, subtitled Why I have written "The Gay-Dombeys", and explaining the novel's title thus: 'I had never felt satisfied with the inconclusive end of Edith Dombey at the height of her beauty; I had felt sure that Walter Gay, with the help of Florence's friends, would build up once more the House of Dombey and Son; introduce steamers instead of sailing ships; and, to please old Mr. Dombey on his death-bed, would add his wife's family name to his own.'.
