Throughout the first half of the 19th-century, numerous printings of 'Gazetteer of the State of New York' appeared. Written and edited by various authors, this work remained popular for years throughout the United States. This particular 1842 issue provides descriptions of the economic state of New York, the education, infrastructure, geology, population of 1840, and much more. However, the majority of this work is an alphabetical collection of every "town, village, post-office, canal, railroad, creek, river, lake, bay, island, mountain, etc." (per the first page) with route mileage to and from Albany.
Note that this edition contains the highly coveted, enormous folding map!
