About This Item
Amsterdam: ex officina Jansonio-Waesbergiana, 1684. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Marbled paper over boards, backed in red calf; folio; pp. [10]ff, 473, with an additional engraved title-page. Binding quite worn, but with nice, untrimmed text block, just a little foxed.
Rare first edition of this important Persian grammar with dictionary in Latin, French, and Italian, by one of the earliest Christian missionaries to Persia. Joseph Labrosse went to the Orient in 1664 and spent 10 years in Persia and Arabia, becoming Prior at Ispahan and Basrah. He later went to Constantinople, where he gained the protection of the Sultan for his mission. The Gazophylacium was priased by Bernier, Petits de la Croix and Chardin. Labrosse's other major work was on Oriental pharmaceutics. Brunet III, 719.
