About This Item

Hartford: Elihu Geer for the Hartford Steam Printing Company, 1886. First Edition. Cloth. Good. First Edition. [2], vii-xii, 13-16, [folding map], 31-501 pages. 4 1/4 x 6 3/4 inches. Publisher's brown cloth with embossed decorations and titles. Spine titles in copper. Front pastedown is calendar for 1866/67. Front flyleaf is Title page. Last page serves as rear pastedown endpaper. Foldout city map is in excellent condition with minor tearing at the fold attachment. Marginal dampstaining to the rear third of the directory at the inner margins. Original circular grommet present at top of spine (for hanging by a string for reference). Previous owner's name on front flyleaf. Occasional smudge, lower page edge with an ink spill. A sound working copy. Cloth. More than just a name directory, this guide contains a very large advertising section on colored paper (pp 313-420) filled with great advertisements for city businesses, some containing nice woodcuts (like Fowler, Davis, & Hoyt on page 361), others with simpler text (as with Jas. H. Ashmead advert. opposite, a "Practical Gold Beater").

An interesting view into post civil war Hartford, Connecticut business and tremendous resource for any genealogical or research library.
