New York: Harroun & Bierstadt, 1878. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +. Octavo, 99pp (this count includes many unprinted leaves). 24 stereoscopic views, each opposite a leaf of text, plus a two-page map of the White Mountains. Entire contents printed on heavy coated cardstock (similar to an actual stereoview card). This is one of just a few stereoview books ever published with a built-in viewer, which is hinged onto the interior of the front board. A photographic illustration with printed instructions demonstrates how the reader is meant to use the viewer to get the full effect of the illustrations. Though there is no credit to any photographer or writer, presumably Edward Bierstadt took the photographs, as he was the patent-holder of the process, and the co-publisher of the book. Contemporary inscription on the front free endpaper. The views are uniformly in excellent condition, as are the text plates; just a few spots of mild finger-soiling. The viewer is almost as new. The corners of the binding show some wear, as to the spine ends. For such a heavy book meant to be held rather precariously, it is in excellent condition overall, with no repairs or sophistications; certainly very good or better. Copies of this caliber appear infrequently in commerce or at auction. A marvelous piece of Americana, with appeal to stereoview and photography collectors.
