Douglas MacArthur, (1880-1964), a graduate of West Point, had a distinguished military career, with noticeable service in the Philippines, before being named commander of the United States forces in the Far East in 1941. He rose to the rank of five star general and was given command of all U. S. army forces in the Pacific. He accepted the formal Japanese surrender onboard the U.S.S. Missouri. In 1951, he was removed by President Truman from his position as commander of the United Nations troops in Korea because of his public statements urging that stronger military action be taken against Communist China..
