Marbled edges and endpapers. x, 483 pp. Engraved title vignette. Engravings in text. Recently professionally rebacked, new leather spine with gilt tooled compartments and new title label. Light wear to extremities of original leather, some rubbing to boards. Bookplate of Lt. Col. J. Hare to front pastedown. Small spot of wear with minimal loss to p. iv. A few spots of light worming. Browning, foxing, and some staining to interior. A few instances of ink marginalia A General History of Quadrupeds, first published in 1790, showcases Bewick's groundbreaking engraving techniques. This volume features engravings of over four hundred animals with accompanying descriptions of their characteristics as understood at the time.
