About This Item
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1893. Hard Cover. Good binding. Octavo. x, [4], 353 pp., fronits, maps. First edition. As issued, in olive cloth with title in gold on the front cover and the spine and silver medallion deboss on the front cover; frontispiece portrait and six maps are present as called for. Spotting and soiling, primarily to the front cover, otherwise, only light rubbing to the binding; gilt top edge is a bit soiled; small, 1/2" closed tear to the fore-edge of the all of the preliminary leaves including the frontispiece, as well as the first two leaves of the body of the text; owner stamp to the title pages; foxing to the frontispiece and adjacent leaves, otherwise contents are largely clean but for one marginal note in pencil correcting a regiment number; a few leaves roughly opened. Nevins calls this "[a] rather brief, but defensive, summary of Johnston's life; Johnston personally selected Hughes as his biographer" CWB II, 66. Dornbusch II, 2875.
