About This Item

Boston: Heliotype Printing Co, 1891. Map. Heliotye. 22 1/2" x 23 1/4".

This incredible 1891 map issued by the City of Boston Park Commission describes Franklin Park in Boston. The map was created by F. L. Olmstead & Co. and depicts the park in beautiful detail, noting individual trees, pathways, streets, fields, and other details. Designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, Franklin Park is considered the 'crowning jewel' of Olmstead's achievements in Boston.

Created originally as a 'country park', it is the largest of component of the Emerald Necklace created by Olmstead. The Park Commissioners had originally hoped to get funding for the park from Ben Franklin's trust, hence the name. Originally built outside of Boston's most populated centers, today the park is a welcoming space in the midst of the city. The map is in good condition with minor wear along the folds and minor toning.

The map was created by the renowned Landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) who also designed some of the most famous parks in the United States, including Central Park in New York City and Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. This is an excellent example of his work.
