About This Item

U.S.A: Alfred A.Knopf, 1988. Book Club (BCE/BOMC). Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 12mo - over 6. Type: Hardback Hardcover BCE Book in Near Fine Condition with a Good Dust Jacket. An engrossing dual biography of two of the best known generals in American history that follows their lives from their childhood, West Point, the Army, and finally to the Civil War during which they were on opposing sides and also the history of the era. The narrative is largely based on eyewitness accounts, diaries, memoirs and demonstrates how the two great combatants were mirror images of each other; and, on another level, how the Civil War appeared as a reenactment of the American Revolution in which each side saw itself as defending the principles laid down by the Founding Fathers--but with the Confederacy and General Lee defending the immorality of slavery and General Grant defending the Union and freedom of all peoples. Handsome binding of burgundy half cloth with copper decoration and gilt titles on spine; navy paper-wrapped boards with gilt title on front. Very clean, unmarked, no edgewear. Text block edges clean and white. Rough cut. Internals also very clean and completely free from any markings. page 453/454 is chipped on fore edge, appears to be from when pages were cut. Tight and solid volume, square with sharp corners. Burgundy and blue jacket with illustration of both generals is clean, no marks or smudges; wear to corners and edges, closed tear to spine heel, one to front lower edge and one to rear upper edge, spine head chipped. 523 pages including Notes, Bibliography and Index. 9.5 x 6.5 x 1.75 inches. Alfred A Knopf, New York, 1988.
