About This Item

First Edition.Two volumes. 704 pp. (27½x18½"), full leather; cherrywood bookstand designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando; original wood shipping crate. No. 0430 of 500 in the Art Edition from a total edition of 3000 copies. Signed by Salgado at the colophon; with a clothbound book of detailed captions explaining each stunning shot.

Salgado's magnum opus is breath-taking in its scope, and the 'sumo' size of the volumes presents each of the images in sharp museum quality. Published in five 'Art Editions' of 100 copies each and a signed Collector's Edition of 2,500 copies. Each of the Art Editions was accompanied by a 13"x16" gelatin silver print of one of the photos. This particular copy is lacking the 'Arctic National Wildlife Preserve" print that accompanied numbers 401-500. Genesis is still in print, priced at $10,000 for the remaining Art Editions and $4,500 for the "Collectors Edition" bound in ¼ leather and cloth. (No. 501–3,000)

[See:www.taschen.com/pages/en/catalogue/photography/all/05767/facts.sebastio_salgado_genesis.htm]

While lacking the gelatin silver print, and with some visible light wear, this is your chance to get the full leather edition limited to 500 copies for 1/3 less than the clothbound edition of 2500.

Salgado is one of the world's most eminent photographers. He began his career as a professional in Paris in 1973 and subsequently worked with the photo agencies Sygma, Gamma, and Magnum Photos. Salgado's photographic projects have been featured in many exhibitions, numerous collected books and anthologies, and displayed in nearly every major photographic museum.

From Taschen: "Sebastião Salgado's haunting black-and-white photographs from the GENESIS project record landscapes and people unchanged in the devastating onslaught of modern society and development. Taken over the course of an epic eight-year expedition, the images are divided into five broad geographic chapters: Planet South, Sanctuaries, Africa, Northern Spaces, Amazonia, and Pantanal."

Condition: Very Good

A few scuffs and minor abrasions to leather; binding of Vol. II just starting internally from head, slight abrasion and gap at gutter on p. 653 of Vol. II; cherrywood stand with a few scratches;

Note: Sorry, no international sales. The total shipping weight is nearly 120lbs. Shipping cost within the US will vary depending upon destination but is estimated at $150. Some small savings might be realized if you don't want the original wood crate. Also, If you are in Northern California, we are willing to make arrangements to meet up for a simple transfer.

About Armadillo & Dicker Books & Ephemera

80 Years of Selling Things People Could Easily Live Without -- but now Online only.*****CONDITION: We are conservative graders. If we say FINE you can count on it. If there are any minor defects [e.g. minor shelf-wear] they will be noted. VERY GOOD means there is light shelf or surface-wear, possibly some light age-toning, maybe a prior owner's inked name inside -- but no significant defects. GOOD means we wish we had a better copy too, but still in collectable condition. Any significant defects will be noted. FAIR usually means the interior is good or better but the covers are heavily worn. POOR means both the interior and the covers are damaged. Again, significant defects will be noted.
