A fine engraved large decorative city view of Geneva in Switzerland. In the upper part in the centre above the coat of arms of Geneva a Latin text,post Tenebras LVX’ the title,Geneua - Genff’ engraved on both sides of the coat of arms. The view is remarkable decorative engraved with a beautiful landscape. with At the bottom of the map with three columns of Poems detailled text descriptions in Dutch, French and Latin. At the right side a table of explanations (numbered 1-19) of churches and important buildings of Geneva., underneath the publisher’s imprint:,Gerrit van Schaghe excudit’. This rare map / engraving was published c. 1690-95 by the fine Dutch map maker van Gerard van Schagen in Amsterdam. It seems, that it was published separately or appeared only in very few atlases.Gerrit Lucasz van Schagen or Schaagen (Gerard van Schagen) (c. 1642 – March 1724?) was an engraver and cartographer from Amsterdam, known for his outstanding engraved maps. He worked often after Nicolaes Visscher I and Frederick de Wit. There is hardly information on this rare Dutch mapmaker his maps and city views do rarely appear on the market. This view is not listed in the bibliography by Koeman,Atlantes Neerlandici’. A very strong sharp impression. A minor loss of 2 letters in the very left poem at the bottom. A few carefully restorations in the paper, mostly in the margins or in blank parts of the map. Overall a very good to excellent rare map or view.
