An interesting Edo woodblock-print of 'Genpei,' a fictional tale of the Genpei War (1180-85), the final struggle in Japan between the

Taira and Minamoto clans which resulted in the Minamoto's establishment of the Kamakura shogunate, a military dictatorship

that dominated Japan from 1192 to 1333. 'Genpei' is illustrated by Chuwa Nishimura and Sadaaki Oku, two of the leading illustrators of the period.

This rare edition is written in a column handwritten format with furigana usage for easier reading. This edition contains excellent illustrations of scenes from the Genpei War also called Jishō-Juei War including samurai, ronin, courtesans, geisha, battles, cities under siege, ship battles, and much more!
