Newton Booth Tarkington was an American writer and playwright most popular for his masterpieces such as The Magnificent Ambersons and Alice Adams. He won the Pulitzer Prize more than once, unlike the two authors who only won one time, who were William Faulkner and John Updike.

Booth Tarkington was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to parents John S. Tarkington and Elizabeth Booth Tarkington. He had the same name with his mother?s relative, Newton Booth, the former governor of California. He was also a relative of the Mayor of Chicago, James Hutchinson Woodworth through the Mayor?s wife, Almyra Booth Woodworth.

He went to study at Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, and finished his college education at Phillips Exeter Academy, a boarding school in the East Coast. He also went to study at Purdue University for two years. He became a member of the Sigma Chi Fraterny in the Purdue University and its Morley Eating Club. Thereafter, he contributed ample donations to Purdue for establishing an all men?s residence hall, and the university named it after him, Tarkington Hall. Purdue University gave him an award as an honorary doctorate.

When he was a young adult, he was asked two times to go back to Princeton for the conferral of honorary degrees, an A. M. and a Litt.D. The conferral of several honorary degree on an alumna of Princeton University and continues to be a record of history in the university.
