About This Item

In 19C maroon half calf, over red marbled boards, corners & edges lightly bumped & worn. Spine, faded, gilt titles & tooling, edges rubbed. Internally, [3], (iv-viii), [1], 2-302 pp, bookplate to fpd (J Maggs), early ink name at base of final page (Charl James), some occasional light soiling & spotting, small loss of impression affecting 3 letters on title, lacks the final advertisement leaf, 11 printers devices. There was another edition published in 1799. Housed in a maroon cloth up & over box. A wonderful copy of a very scare and interesting piece of fiction? (Folio, 9.7*15.5 cms). (ESTC T144445). Title continues: A Series of most remarkable occurrences during his seven years travels abroad; five of which were spent with a Lady he had released from Slavery. With particulars since his return with her to England. The extraordinary adventures of a Welsh sailor captured by French privateers, enslaved in Algeria, his escape with the wealthy Cleone, their joining of a caravan to Cairo, the loss and recovery of their jewelery from robbers, the pursuit of Cleone by another woman ("I die your slave, if not quickened to life again by your indulgent influence. In short I love you, even to the degree of foregoing all my future prospects with my husband... Zenora sigh'd, grasped my hand, and pressed her breast to mine all night..." - spurned she attempts to poison Cleone, is tried and executed), a journey to Mecca, further wranglings with slavers before the return journey to Britain during which the ship captain threatens Cleone that "if she did not comply to be his wife... he would use her as his whore". The author, of this supposed biography, eventually returns to Wales, where we leave him married with two children.
