About This Item

London: Royal Geographical Society, 1914. First Edition. Paper wraps. Very Good. [9.75x6in]; Vol.37, No.6, June 1911; 12 pp., 1 map of alternative configuration of Antarctica and 1 colored foldout (11.5x13.25in neatline, 15x15in sheet) at rear also showing proposed ship tracks, base locations and current information on Antarctica ice and land features; Excerpt bound in light blue paper wrappers with black ink lettering and seal on front; Some wear to covers and edges, age toning throughout, a few foxing spots, prior owner pencil writing on first page and on map margin, several closed tears and crease splits on foldout map. [Conrad p. 207]. This article was issued before Mawson's Aurora, under the command of Captain J. K. Davis, left Hobart, Tasmania on December 2,1911. The purpose of the article was to describe the Australasian Antarctic Expedition objectives and science programs in a little known area of Antarctica. Another purpose was to raise addition funding in England for the expedition. The Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911-1914 set out to explore the Antarctic coast land south of Australia known as Adelie and Queen Mary Lands, and was successful in exploring new lands, recording extreme weather conditions, and gathering scientific data. Mawson wrote "The Home of the Blizzard" issued in 1915, which during the war, had limited publishing success. He was the only survivor of the Eastern survey party and his struggle is a harrowing Southern sledging journey that Mertz and Ninnis died and Mawson was barely able to survive.
