About This Item

New York City, NY: Edition Peters, 2002. First Edition. First Printing.. Softcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. New York City, NY: Edition Peters, 2002. Softcover. Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 11 pages. Rare George Crumb collectible item. A fine copy of the Edition Peters Booklet Publication, signed and inscribed by George Crumb. Shows the great and ground-breaking American composer in a closeup portrait on the cover. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. Booklet size is 6.0 X 8.0 inches (vertical portrait) . Encased in its own protective plastic sheet. Without DJ, as issued. There is no ISBN. The Booklet Publication is now rare. Presents "George Crumb Edition Peters Booklet Publication". Provides an insightful Biography and a comprehensive List of Works within its eleven pages, and is indispensable as such. George Crumb's masterpiece, "Ancient Voices of Children", set to the poems of Federico Garcia Lorca, and as originally performed by the incomparable Jan DeGaetani, is one of the most shattering experiences every serious music-lover is likely to have: Post-Humanist and post-Romantic yet profoundly emotional, it restores the centrality of the human voice to contemporary music. There is nothing else like it in the otherwise barren landscape of atonal American music during which dominant period it was composed. A strong case can surely be made that atonality was a European historical necessity: In a German composer's hands, at ANY point in the 20th century, it becomes universal because it sincerely and heartbreakingly captures the anguish of Postwar Europe. It remains firmly and merely local, a technical exercise, when an American composer adopts the same language, whether it's Aaron Copland, on the one hand, or Charles Wuorinen, on the recalcitrant other. George Crumb's intrepid body of work is Exhibit A of the successful and triumphant break from atonality by the American Century. An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item for George Crumb collectors. This Booklet Publication is very boldly and beautifully signed and inscribed in black pen-marker in front by the artist: "Best wishes, George Crumb". It is signed directly on the Cover itself, not on a tipped-in page. There is no recipient named. It is the single most beautiful signed portrait of the artist we have ever seen. This title is a classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and inscribed copy of the Booklet Publication available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: OCLC locates very few copies in public and private universities. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest composers of the 20th century. A fine item. .
