Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound set of three hardcover copies comprising the life and letters and accomplishments of George Eliot, the pseudonym of Mary Ann or Mary Anne or Marian Evans (1819-1880), as rendered by her husband, John Walter Cross to whom she was married for only a year prior to her death. The author contributed greatly to Victorian- Era literature and culture and is best known for having penned Adam Bede; The Mill on the Floss; Silas Marner; Romola; Felix Holt, The Radical; Middlemarch; and Daniel Deronda. Plentiful correspondence to and from her publishers and Charles Dickens, Harriet Beecher Stowe and many others. Clean interiors, if heavily toned, moderate rubbing to extremities, scuffing along edges, previous owner's bookplates inside front flaps, being from the library of the Academy of Arts and Sciences. Protected in stiff plastic sleeves. Brown marbled paper over boards to all three volumes, pebbly brown cloth-backed, five raised bands to spines, accession stickers quite faint at spine bottoms. Lovely brown and tan endpapers front and rear. Fine frontis black-and-white engraving of George Eliot at frontis of first volume, tissue-protected, shadowing recto. Volume I: ix [2], 1-348 pp., with five illustrations, one being the engraved portrait by M. Rajon at frontis; Volume II: frontis matter, 1-324 pp., with black-and-white engraved portrait of a younger author at frontis, tissue-protected, from G.J. Stodart, quite fine, leading to shadowing recto. Volume III: two engravings, one at frontis being of their house at Cheyne Walk--Chelsea, frontis matter, 2-340 pp. including extensive Index, pp. 317-340, then publisher's ads. Protected in stiff plastic jackets, having done their jobs quite well.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
