About This Item

Firenze: A spese dell'autore, 1864. 12mo, 185 x 121 mms., pp. [iv], 96, original printed wrappers, with author, title, and imprint on front cover; some slight wear to wrappers, and corners creased The translator is the same Antonio Angelelli who is responsible for a later publication, a shorter book titled, Memorie Storiche di Montaione in Valdelsa (1875), which was also published in Florence, and whose title-page describes him as the Professor of Italian literature at the Military College in Florence ("Professore di Lettere Italiane nel Collegio Militare di Firenze"). COPAC locates a copy of Memorie Storiche (1875), but does not give a birth date or death date for Angelelli, nor other details about him. I am happy to assert that a great deal more can be said of Antonio Angelelli today, as there is an account of him in the biographical reference book by Rino Salvestrini, Personaggi nella storia di Montaione, published online, where it is said that Antonio Angelelli died on 25 March 1910 in Florence, and that he died at the age of 77, so his birth year was around 1833 (p. 26). Undoubtedly this is the translator of Virgil, as it is said that among his writings is a poetical version of Virgil's Georgics ("una versione poetica delle Georgiche di Virgilio") (pp. 26-27). Angelelli was also apparently a knight (cavaliere) of two Italian orders ("cavaliere dell'Ordine della Corona d'Italia e dell'Ordine di Cristo di Portogallo") as well as a professor of Italian literature and history at the Royal Military College in Florence (p. 26). Salvestrini's Personaggi can be downloaded: < https://www.montaione.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Personaggi-nella-storia-di-Montaione.pdf >. This 1864 translation of Virgil on offer, written by a doubly-cavalier Italian knight no less, has, until now, been overlooked by nearly all bibliographers of Virgil as well as nearly all collectors of Virgiliana of any stripe. This is the rarest book of a translation of Virgil that I have ever handled. No copy is located by COPAC, WorldCat, British Library, Bodleian, or Library of Congress. Apparently this is a 96-page translation into modern Italian of Virgil's Georgics, which was published in Florence (Firenze) in 1864. I locate no other edition of the book. UNCOMMON
