About This Item

New York: The Heritage Press, 1953. First Edition . Hard Back. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. 7"X10 1/2. Bramanti, Bruno - Xylographer. 145 Pages. No defects to this beautiful book with flawless interior text pages. The slipcase shows some wear at the top of the spine area. This is a 1953 Heritage Club Edition that is based on the 1500 copy limited edition published by Oficina Bodini at Verdona. This club edition was created by the craftsman at Kellogg & Bulkeley of Hartford who made the plates and printed the hand drawn flowers on a soft grey-green linen binding. Over this pattern the title is stamped in gold leaf against a background of black leaf. The paper was especially made by the International Paper Company. The book is illustrated with four full-page and many smaller black and white wood-cuts by Bruno Bramanti (xylographer). Thus the typographer-printers have joined; with the best xylographer to print the best poem by the best poet. Laid in is the Heritage Club monthly newsletter, The Sandglass, that devotes four pages to explain how all this came about.

Synopsis

Virgil's glorious celebration of the natural world-brought vividly to life in a powerful new translation. Virgil 's Georgics is an extraordinary work and one of the greatest poems of the classical world. This new verse translation captures the rich beauty and abundant imagery of the original, recreating the ancient masterpiece for our times. "Georgic" means "to work the earth," and The Georgics combines practical wisdom on tending the land with exuberant eulogies to the rhythms of nature. From idyllic descriptions of hills strewn with wild berries in "vinespread autumn" to warnings of gods and natural disasters, it is at once a reflection on the cycles of life, death, and rebirth; an argument for the nobility of labor; and an impassioned reflection on the Roman empire.
