About This Item
Hardcover with slipcase box, published by The Heritage Press, 1953. Classic ancient poem in four parts, each part somewhat based on the agricultural season of the year. This is the first Heritage Press edition. This version of the poem was translated in English verse by John Dryden. Introduction by George Whicher, and illustrated by Bruno Bramanti. 7" X 10-3/4", sewn binding, decorated cover boards. This copy includes the Heritage Press newsletter, 'Sandglass', which provides further information on the book and this edition. The cover boards are flat, the corners are not bumped or creased. Title and author printed on the spine in gold within a black field. All design elements on the cover boards and spine are intact and not rubbed or worn. Dark blue edges to the text block. There is a former owner's book plate on the first flyleaf page - a label pasted to the page - about 3" X 4". No further writing or marks besides that though. This is not a library discard copy. The outer slipcase box is intact, though it does show a couple of chip marks to the covering of the box to the spine panel. The attached photos are of the copy we have in our inventory.
Synopsis
Virgil's glorious celebration of the natural world-brought vividly to life in a powerful new translation. Virgil 's Georgics is an extraordinary work and one of the greatest poems of the classical world. This new verse translation captures the rich beauty and abundant imagery of the original, recreating the ancient masterpiece for our times. "Georgic" means "to work the earth," and The Georgics combines practical wisdom on tending the land with exuberant eulogies to the rhythms of nature. From idyllic descriptions of hills strewn with wild berries in "vinespread autumn" to warnings of gods and natural disasters, it is at once a reflection on the cycles of life, death, and rebirth; an argument for the nobility of labor; and an impassioned reflection on the Roman empire.
