Gilt embossed burnt-orange linen boards/VG; edge rubs, soiling & showing faint discoloration. Illustrated endpapers; fraying to front/rear hinges. Oral literature. Story of Tibeto-Mongolian, pre-Bhuddhist mythical hero who was chosen by the gods to descend to earth in human form to combat evil. Told by Ida Zeitlin, primarily based on the 1836 German translation by Isaac Jakob Schmidt of the 18th century Ch'ing Dynasty edition. Following the format of "storytellers' prompt books", each chapter is preceded with an introductory poem encapsulating essential points. The 9 chapters begin with Gessar Khan's descent into human world, and ends with his return to the heavens "having uprooted the tenfold evil and restored gladness to the hearts of men". Strong copy less dust jacket.
