About This Item

New York: Viking, 2019. 337 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. "On the Fourth of July, 1942, four Allied ships traversing the Arctic split off from their decimated convoy to head farther north into the ice field of the North Pole. They were seeking safety from Nazi bombers and U-boats in a perilous white maze of ice floes, growlers, and giant bergs. This is the extraordinary story of their journey and of survival and shifting alliances at a pivotal moment during World War II. The high-level politics that put convoy PQ-17 in the path of the Nazis was far from the minds of the crews aboard their vessels. The twenty-four-hour Arctic daylight in mid-summer gave them no respite from bombers or submarines, and they all feared the giant German battleship 'Tirpitz', nicknamed the 'Big Bad Wolf'. Icebergs were as dangerous as Nazis as the remnants of the convoy tried to slip through to deliver their cargo (of war supplies) in one of the most dramatic escapes of the war. At Archangel they found a traumatized, starving city and a disturbing preview of the Cold War ahead." Two tiny bumps to the bottom edge of the front board. Dust jacket has some light edge wrinkling - mainly at the top of the spine.. Not Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good.
